HPI at the National Forum:

Reducing Events of Harm: The Role of Leadership

Achieving significant reductions in serious events of harm to patients is the primary objective of a group of hospitals that are implementing a comprehensive culture of patient safety based on strategies proven successful in creating the excellent safety record in nuclear power and other high reliability industries. Since 2003, reductions up to 65% in serious safety events have been achieved. The presentation will highlight a key element – a defined leadership method that has proven to be necessary in sustaining and maintaining these results as it has been implemented in three organizations.

Presented by:
Gary Yates, MD - Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer Sentara Healthcare

Bill Corley - President, Community Health Network

Stephen Muething, MD - Assistant Vice-President of Patient Safety
Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center

Objectives:

1. Describe how identifying a leadership method can enable the
achievement and more importantly sustain reductions in serious
safety events

2. Describe key elements of a leadership method that has been
implemented at organizational and microsystem levels

3. Identify tools used in the successful creation of a leadership method
to drive and sustain culture change.
