with Healthcare Performance Improvement and also is the Vice
President for Medical Affairs of Sentara Norfolk General Hospital,
a tertiary facility of Sentara Healthcare in Norfolk, Virginia.
He is the institution’s leader of the Clinical Quality and Safety
agenda and has led teams at Sentara in care improvement during
participation in the Institute for Healthcare Improvement collaboratives
over the years. While a practicing clinician of Pulmonary and
Critical Care Medicine, he led the initiative to make the critical
care units safer by the development and implementation of the
nations first operational e-ICU (electronic ICU). This use of
telemedicine, which was proven to reduce both mortality and
cost of care during his tenure as Medical Director of that operation,
has now been adopted in multiple other institutions across the
nation and more recently by the military in the Pacific theater.
Previously, as the Chairman of the Board of Governors of the
Sentara Medical Group, he led the consolidation of two large
physician groups of very different practice cultures into a
single integrated operation of nearly 200 physicians across
the Sentara system.
